The propeller control systems, propeller seals, bearings and gears are at risk of being damaged if hydraulic and lubrication oil is not kept free from seawater, particles and oxidation residues. Water ingress happens through propeller seals, due to wear, damage of seals and movement of the shaft. Seawater causes failure of lubrication, corrosion, and increases wear rate on bearings and gears. Therefore, they must work at all time to achieve a high reliability and keep DP operation.
Failure to maintain oil clean and dry can cause the DP system to fail. If the thrusters are not working, then you lose charter and risk docking and costly repairs.
